Every Wednesday:

Peace Coalition

The Nashville Peace Coalition meets nearly every Wednesday night at the Friends Meeting House at 530 26th Avenue North, Nashville, from 6 to 7:30 pm. (For the very rare exceptions -- e.g., for Christmas -- check this calendar.) We discuss what's going on in town, and sometimes we plan demonstration rallies or other activities.

We have an online discussion group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/peace-coalition/. You're welcome to join the in-person group or the online group or both.

For more information, check the online group, or contact LeftyMathProf@Yahoo.com.

Bells Bend Planning Meeting

On July 24 the Metro Planning staff will present the Scottsboro/Bells
Bend Detailed Design Plan to the Planning Commission for a vote. A
positive vote on the plan in its current form makes it almost certain
that the May Development will receive approval later in the year by
the Planning Commission. The meeting begins at 4:00 pm with the
Scottsboro/Bells Bend discussion scheduled to begin around 6 pm. We
are asking that everyone be there by 5 pm so that we are ready when
the testimonies begin. The meeting will be held at the "Metro
Southeast" Building, 1417 Murfreesboro Pike (the old Genesco Building,
east of the Briley Parkway intersection). We hope to have several
hundred supporters there, so you may want to arrive early for parking
and to avoid rush-hour traffic. As you turn into the parking lot, it
will be in the second building on your right. A map to Metro Southeast
can be found at the following link:

Lecture: Closing the Food Gap
"Closing the Food Gap" author Mark Winne to discuss food and farming
issues at free, public event hosted by the Food Security Partners of
Middle Tennessee

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – On Thursday, July 24th at 6pm the Food Security
Partners of Middle Tennessee will host a book talk and signing with
Mark Winne, author of Closing the Food Gap: Resetting the Table in the
Land of Plenty. The event is free and open to the public and will be
held at Second Presbyterian Church, 3511 Belmont Blvd, Nashville. The
event will be followed by a light reception featuring locally-grown
foods.

Winne will read from his book, Closing the Food Gap, in which he
chronicles the beginnings of the food movement and the crippling
effect Regan-era cuts to federal food assistance programs had on the
poor and elderly. He charts the role "supermarket abandonment" and the
proliferation of fast-food chains have played in the growing obesity
and diabetes crisis among low-income Americans. Winne provides an
insider's look at strategies employed by those working to close the
food gap in communities across the country, from New Orleans to
Brooklyn to Oregon. Food banks, community gardens, farmer's markets,
cooperative supermarkets, community supported agriculture programs,
and nutrition programs are just a few of the models he discusses.

A book signing and reception will follow the reading.
